Odaiba (お台場) (sometimes known as Daiba) is a large artificial island in Tokyo
Bay, Japan. Administratively it is part of Minato and Koto Wards.
Build on reclaimed land in 1851, Odaiba (Daiba which means fort) was originally a
series a 6 fortresses designed to protect Edo from naval attacks - especially those
of commodore Perry's black ships who had shown up the same year.
Daiba became a public park in 1928, and not until 1996 was the area redeveloped
as a commercila and entertainment district. Odaiba is accessible by monorail rfom
Shimbashi or by car, using the Rainbow Bridge. It has its own little Statue of
Liberty, an acquarium, several huge shopping malls, including the Venus Fort,
which reconstructed the atmosphere of an 18th century Italian town.

The modern redevelopment of Odaiba started after the success of Expo '85 in
Tsukuba. The Japanese economy was riding high, and Odaiba was to be a
showcase as futuristic living, built at a cost of over $10 billion. The "bubble
economy" burst in 1991, and by 1995 Odaiba was a virtual wasteland,
underpopulated and full of vacant lots.
In 1996, the area was rezoned from pure business to allow also commercial and
entertainment districts, and the area started coming back to life as Tokyo
discovered the seaside it never had. Hotels and shopping malls opened up,
several large companies including Fuji TV moved their headquarters to the island,
and transportation links improved.

The trip to Odaiba can be fairly confusing if you don't plan ahead or if you are
unfamiliar with the Tokyo Transportation System. On the other hand getting to
Odaiba is and fun adventure of its own. You can either take the Yuriamome
Elevated Monorail and travel on top of Tokyo Bay as you cross the Rainbow
Bridge or the shorter route and start from Hinode Pier and take a Cruise.
From Tokyo Station
=> Yurikamome Elevated Monorail
Take the JR Yamanote Line to the JR Hamamatsucho Station and then a short
walk to Shimbashi Station (U-01) and use the Yurikamome to Odaiba Kaihin Koen
Station (U-06).
Or

Take the JR Yamanote Line to the JR Hamamatsucho Station and take a 10 min
walk to Hinode Pier. The 50-minute excursion takes you around the bay,
affording you good views of Odaiba .
